Paddle Your Way to Fun at the Annual Friends of Sugar Creek Canoe Race!
Calling all Canoe and Kayak Enthusiasts!
This Saturday, the Friends of Sugar Creek and the Montgomery County Visitors Bureau are hosting their annual Sugar Creek Canoe Race, at the same time this historic event welcomes paddlers from across the Midwest.
A Canoe Race Steeped in Tradition:
Did you know this race has been a beloved Montgomery County tradition for over 50 years? Started by local legend Bob Stwalley, the race continues to celebrate his dedication to Sugar Creek. The recreational race is even named in his honor! At 94 years old, Bob is still actively involved, even serving as the official race starter.
Canoe Race Options for Everyone:
Even if you’re a seasoned racer or just looking for a fun day on the water, there’s a race for you!
The Bob Stwalley Recreational Race (4 miles): Perfect for families and friends, this relaxed race is a great way to enjoy the beauty of Sugar Creek. Decorate your boat and get ready for some laughs! ($10 registration fee)
Professional Race (15.5 miles): Sanctioned by the United States Canoe Association, this race is a favorite among competitive paddlers. Earn points and experience the thrill of racing down Sugar Creek. ($20 registration fee)

All in all, everyone is welcome to participate! Register online at https://www.visitmoco.com/canoe-race/ or in person on race day between 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Old Coke Plant on Lafayette Avenue.
Can’t Race? No Problem!
By all means, cheer on the racers from the sidelines. Spectators are encouraged to line the course at the start/finish and the various creek bridges. The finish line at Rock River Ridge Trailhead will be the site of the awards ceremony, where you can see all the participants.
The Friends of Sugar Creek believe that experiencing the beauty of Sugar Creek firsthand fosters appreciation and care for this natural resource. So grab your paddle, join the race, and help celebrate this Montgomery County tradition!
